Hey all, just read an interesting post on the US hunter forum, it's a bit long, but quite interesting - Goes into detail about he mechanics of the warriors taunt works, and how (with the aid of a hunter) you can use this to enable a dps call to happen much sooner (i.e. before the usuall 3-4 sunders).
Anyway, here it is.
---------------------------------------
The Mechanics of Aggro
All damage done and abilities used on a mob generate hate. The person with hate sufficient to draw attacks from the mob is referred to as having aggro.
When multiple people are on a mob's hate list, aggro is not necessarily given to the person with the most hate. In order to draw aggro from the person currently topping the list, a character in melee range must do damage sufficient to generate 110% of the hate of the current leader. A character at range must generate 130% of the hate of the current leader to draw aggro. A healer must generate healing hate (figured as hate=1/4 of health points healed) equal to the current leader to draw aggro. My source for these numbers is the Red Circle Clan's Aggro 101 primer (http://redcircle.stormreaverclan.com/aggro1.html). (Note: Do not misunderstand their correct statement that there is no aggro associated with pulling. It should be most correctly phrased that there is no additional aggro associated with the act of pulling (over and above the hate generated by the ability used to pull.)
Class Abilities Relevant to the Discussion
Warrior Taunt: A warrior's taunt ability gives them exactly the amount of hate necessary to take aggro from the current leader on the hate list. This also means, warriors, that taunt is useless if you already have aggro. It also means that the more hate the person at the top of the hate list has when the warrior taunts, the more hate the warrior gets from the taunt. There is no cap to this.
Hunter's Feign Death: When hunters feign death, they are completely removed from the mobs hate list.
Hunter's Distracting Shot: Generates 600 hate points, roughly equivalent to 2.5 warrior sunders.
Hunter's Aimed Shot: Hits for 600+ damage without critting and does not share a cooldown with Distracting Shot.
The theory: A hunter generates the maximum hate possible during the pull. For us in MC, I've been using distracting shot. When the mob passes the warrior, the warrior taunts, receiving hate sufficient to gain aggro. Because of the way taunt works, the more hate I have before he taunts, the more hate he gains from taunt. The hunter then feigns death, thereby removing himself from the aggro list. Because the warrior now has a significant amount of hate, the raid, particularly the ranged fighters, can begin DPS much sooner without fear of gaining aggro. The healers are also less likely to pull aggro before the warrior has landed a few revenge blows or sunders.
